Amazon Web Services (AWS) has committed to a substantial $5 billion investment in Mexico, signaling a pivotal move to enhance digital infrastructure and accelerate technological growth across Latin America. Central to this investment is the establishment of a new AWS cloud infrastructure region in Querétaro, chosen for its favorable location, skilled workforce, and robust connectivity.
The ambitious project aims to contribute over $10 billion to Mexico’s GDP over the next 15 years while creating approximately 7,000 jobs annually. This marks a significant milestone in AWS’s ongoing efforts to expand its global presence and support economic development in emerging markets. Paula Bellizia, Vice President of AWS for Latin America, highlighted the importance of this investment, emphasizing its potential to foster innovation, drive business growth, and enhance digital transformation in the region.
The Querétaro cloud region will provide essential services, including data storage, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities, catering to businesses of all sizes. These services are expected to empower local industries, improve operational efficiencies, and support startups, enterprises, and public sector organizations.
In addition to infrastructure development, AWS is prioritizing workforce training. The company plans to equip over 200,000 individuals with critical cloud and technical skills through educational programs and certifications. This initiative aligns with Mexico’s broader nearshoring and digital transformation goals, making the country a more attractive destination for foreign investment and technology-based enterprises.
AWS’s investment also underscores its commitment to sustainability. The Querétaro region will incorporate energy-efficient technologies and utilize renewable energy sources to reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with AWS’s broader environmental goals.
This announcement comes at a time when the Mexican government is actively seeking to attract foreign investment to boost its economy and position the country as a hub for technology and innovation. AWS’s decision to establish a new cloud region in Querétaro represents a significant step forward in achieving these objectives, further solidifying Mexico’s role as a key player in the global digital economy.
